Why I write realistic fiction.
YB: What am I going to read now? (Hear the panic at the edge of his voice).
Me: Well, let’s see. Your brother liked this one.
(Repeat several times)
YB: Those are all fantasy. I want a real book.
Me: Like non-fiction? There’s this one.
YB: No! A story. A real story.
He likes fantasy and he likes non-fiction. But not all the time. Personally, I’ve always preferred “real” stories. Which is, of course, the real reason that’s what I write.
(He compromised and took Skellig by David Almond – who’s to say it’s not real?)
