When naming a jerk of a character, the first name that popped into my head was SETH.
Bringing memories of sixth grade.
I had a serious crush on a boy named Seth. He was tall, dark, and handsome – and a bit of a bad boy.
I was shy and incredibly self-conscious about the fact that I already had C-cup boobies. Which was probably why he noticed me. We flirted a little, I crushed harder. Arrangements were made and soon we were “going together.” Which for me, meant I was now too paralyzed to actually talk to him.
And so, he broke up with me. Heartbreak! But the worst thing was that as I stood on the corner doing my Safety Patrol duty, his bus drove by and Seth flipped me off! In front of all my cross-ees and all his friends on the bus – who checked the next day to make sure I’d seen his official break-up gesture.
I was so deeply hurt and embarrassed. I never spoke to him again that year (no big change) and then we moved at the end of the school year so I didn’t have to see him anymore.
Early hurts are memorable – enough so that many many many years later I still want to name a jerk of a character after him. Revenge, finally!
