My YA-WIP (love the way that sounds like a hipster cowboy talking) has a soundtrack!
Some random history: I love mix tapes – a collection of songs, especially if they are put together with someone (me) in mind. In college, one of the dishwashers (and good friend) that I worked with used to make them for me on a regular basis. He’d include my favorites but sprinkle in new surprises that I’d never heard before. Didn’t realize how spoiled I was.
Then, when I was too deep in diapers and lullabys to listen to the radio, I could count on my favorite librarian and her music-junky hubby to keep me somewhat current with a mixed CD each Christmas.
Until I-tunes came along. Where you can get any song you want. You can make playlists in minutes instead of hours. They make suggestions for you based on your preferences. But I don’t want to pick – I want someone else to pick for me – to surprise me.
So, back to the point (I think)… Ages ago I bought the soundtrack for the movie The Last Kiss. I had never – and still haven’t – seen the movie. I bought it because I loved the compilation CDs for the TV show Scrubs (the old hilarious one before they ruined it) and for the movie Garden State – the common denominator being Zach Braff. Apparently he made these “mix tapes” for me.
Well, I can’t see that movie now; because that soundtrack is now for my YA-WIP. Each and every song reminds me of one of my characters, their relationships, and/or a situation in my story. Every single one! Whenever I have the car to myself I crank that baby up and the ideas and revelations flow.
Music muse magic. YA-WIP and YEE-HAW.
